The place to talk about all aspects of Prom

So it's finally time for Prom!

You've probably been waiting all year for the big night, Whether you have a date or not this is YOUR night to look fabulous and feel like a princess. So now it's time to get organised.

prom dress

The first step is to find your dress.

Start looking early as this will leave plenty of time for any alterations you may need to make.

Decide what style you want to go for. Do you want classic and elegant or fresh and funky?

Choose a colour that suits you, just because your friend can get away with wearing lime green doesn't mean you can.

Once you've decided on the style and colour, take a girlfriend or two and have a look around the different shops, malls and boutiques in your area. Take a camera with you and snap photos of each other in a variety of dresses, then later on, when your not caught up in the excitement, you can have a night in comparing the photos to see which looks best on each of you.

Now you've picked the dress, shop around. Many stores will have similar dresses but a very different prices. Look online, there are hundreds of online stores selling prom dresses. Many stock designer dresses such as Jovani, Sherri Hill, Mori Lee, Flip Prom and more at discounted prices.

If you want to stand out why not go for something different like Gothic or Punk.

If you want to go vintage, ask older relatives or family friends if they have there old prom dresses, you'll be surprised what grandma has hiding in the attic, true vintage chic!.

It's also worth checking out your local charity and second hand shops, You could find something unusual or unique, these will also be a fraction of the price. This goes for accessories too.

If your creative you could always customize a dress yourself with beading or bows, to give your own unique style.

Styles to suit you

It's always good to know what style dress will suit your body shape.

dress

If you're pear shaped

For pear shape I recommend a dress with a fitted top and full or a-line skirt. Or if you are comfortable with your larger behind go for something a bit more form fitting. You should always accent what you like about your body; it is not about hiding what you don't.

If you're slender

If you have a slim figure the illusion of curves can be achieved by drawing attention to your bust line, waist line, or a dress that bells out. Also, you might try dresses that draw attention to your waist such as a wrap dress or one with a belt.

If you're busty

You can play up what you have by wearing a gorgeous neckline but look for something with fuller coverage so you can make sure you have adequate support. If you would like to draw attention away from your chest look for a dress that attracts the eye to the hem.

If you're petite

If you are petite show a little leg and go with or go with an asymmetrical hemline to make you appear taller. Floor length gowns and full skirts tend to overwhelm your frame. Delicate feminine dresses will go well your body type.

If you have an hourglass frame

If you have an hour glass figure consider yourself lucky! You have a naturally well proportioned body with means you don't need to disguise any thing. Almost every style will flatter your figure. Have fun with it!

If you're an Apple

For an apple shaped body a dress with an empire waist will help draw attention to your middle. Also a higher waist line means the dress may not be as tight in your problem area. If you have nice athletic legs, you might try to show them off by wearing a shorter dress.

You've got the dress, now it's time to accessorize!

Accessorizing is more than than just picking out a pair of earrings. You need to think about make-up, shoes, purses, hair even your date!

Jewellery

Jewellery should enhance your dress, not overpower it. If you have pearl beading in your dress, try a nice pair of pearl earrings. If your going for classic in a black dress go for silver and diamonds. DON'T go for chunky bead necklaces if you have a nice elegant dress.

Purses

The same goes for purses, you don't want to be carrying a big bulky bag around with you all night, instead try a small clutch or purse in a colour that will show off your dress, not clash with it.

Shoes

Shoes should also compliment your dress, personally I try to match my shoes with my purse, so as not to have to many colour in one outfit. Remember you are going to be doing a lot of dancing so make sure they are comfortable.

Hair and Make-Up

Try out different hair styles and make-up before the night, have a girly night in doing make overs on each other. Alternatively book a day at a salon at let the professionals do the work.

Your Date

If you have a date you are going with, decide if you want to be traditional and go in matching outfits. You will need to let him know in plenty of time what colours you have decided on, otherwise you could end up clashing with him in orange and you in green!

Corsage

If your date is giving you a corsage, don't be afraid to tell him what flowers you want, You may want to go together to pick them out. Take a photo or swatch of material from your dress to the florists so they can suggest a suitable colour for you.
